Discovery Garden Weekly Announcements

Announcing Weekly Garden Walks

Garden Managers

This garden has brought back a 15 minute walk to one garden each week. Garden Coordinators will briefly talk about their garden and point out some of their plants.  This is a fun way to learn about all the garden rooms and learn about some of the features in that space.  Please listen for the "bell" at 11:45.

The garden walk this week will be at Naturescape.

Naturescape Garden Talk - Lesser celandine, habitat piles, and skimmer/bog project

Kay Torrance

During the Garden Talk on Tuesday, April 30th, Naturescape will talk about the lesser celandine that has been growing next to the pond for years.  Here is the WSU paper that was helpful making the ID.  Here is the Skagit Noxious Weed guide that shows its designation.

We are also converting our corner mulch pile into a habitat pile.  The first one will be in the corner as we reshape our mulch pen and remove the posts and plastic mesh.  We will  be determining a location for the next pile along the hedgerow.  Now that we have a vision, hopefully we can make the second one more artistic.

Stop by and see our new pond skimmer and hear the plans for the bog install that is coming this summer.

Entrance Garden Coordinator(s)

Garden Managers

We are still in need of a coordinator or two for the Entrance Garden.  This is a very important garden (they all are in their own way) and this garden is our first impression for visitors as they enter. It  has been cleaned up a bit and still needs attention and maintenance. This can be a fun garden for a creative gardener. Challenge yourself to help create a low maintenance fabulous garden on a small budget!! It can be done. We also need a veteran to be with any interns that would like to help out.  Thanks for listening again.

Looking for New Children's Garden Coordinators

Glee Blank

New Children's Garden Coordinators Needed:  A great chance to come to play every Tuesday with 1 or 2 of your favorite fellow MGs as the new leaders!  Sandbox, bee house, birdbath, hopscotch, checkerboard, real boat and nearby water, sunflower house with a turtle inside, statues, chimes, slide, and more PLUS a garden to dig in!  If this sounds good to you, please contact Glee Blank or one of the Garden Managers soon.

Plant Fair Boxes

Claire Cotnoir

Box collection is ramping up! Bring them to the DG on Tuesdays—they will be picked up and stored until Plant Fair. Please snag extra boxes wherever they are available, when you’re out and about or shopping at places like Costco. Do not break them down. We need them intact and ready to use. Thank you!

Found - garden pruners

Add file attachements

Deborah Smeltzer

A pair of small blue garden pruners was found at Calhoun Greenhouse a few weeks ago - see photo. There is no name on them. Kelly Maupin sent the photo around to the Tomato Care group with no response. Deborah will drop them back by Calhoun before Monday so that the owner can collect them. If they are not collected by Plant Fair then they will be added to Tomato Team supplies.

Monthly Coordinators Meeting

Its time for our monthly garden coordinators meeting Tuesday April 30th at 10:00 am in the Pavilion.  It should last about 30 minutes.  Hope to see you all there.

Heather Garden

Teryl Rhodes and Robin Lee Fowler

Hello, we could really use some help digging out our dead heather in the Heather Garden on Tuesday. Unfortunately we lost quite a few this winter. The more help the better. It is a big task for two people so we would appreciate any help we can get.

Thanks,

Teryl and Robin

Rhody garden

Beverly Dale Crunk

I'd love some help deadheading  and fertilizing these beautiful  rhodys.

Rose Garden

Virgene

Hi all:  The Rose Garden continues to need help.  We have a few more roses to prune, including a climber that I will hope to finish with this week.  We also have a couple of other projects to tidy up.  Then there is always weeding if you want more practice.  Hope to see you there. Thanks!

Removing Tulips

Julie Powell

Well the tulips almost made it to the last day.  Two blooms left!   Need a little help removing the pots from the bed along the fence. Then putting pots into my car for their ride to my house where they will continue to die back, rest awhile  then making bulbs for next year.   In the fall these bulbs will return to the garden so other gardens may have spring color.   Thanks   Julie

Worm Compost

Herta Kurp

Next Tuesday, April 30, we are harvesting the worm castings from the worm bin in the compost area, stop by anytime in the morning to learn about the procedure.

Also, we gladly accept any kitchen scraps from your home to offer as food for the worms.  Bring them to the compost area on Tuesdays and we take care of it, thanks,

The compost team Herta and Katrina
